Simply scouting around the city and becoming familiar with the geography and discovering the hidden extras is a good introduction. The city layout is well done and full of diversity, with different zones for different classes, races, and gangs, including different vehicles and equipment.

While Grand Theft Auto has always been a violent, mature-themed series, it has always balanced the violent crime with an equal amount of tongue-in-cheek humor and style. Vice City is no exception, presenting an exaggerated view of the 1980s that makes use of a number of the kitschy pop-culture stereotypes found in film and television from the decade.

The noticeable absence of the "4" from Vice City's title seems to indicate this game should be viewed as a rehash, or expansion of GTA3 rather than a proper sequel. Playing the game reveals that's not an unfair description - it has the same half-open-ended, half-sequential mission structure, roughly the same controls, the same graphic engine (with some minor improvements) and the same star-based "wanted" level, with the Feds and the military coming for you at the higher levels.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City takes place in 1986 and puts you in the shoes of Tommy Vercetti. A henchman of Sonny Forelli, Vercetti is fresh from a 15-year stint in prison where he did time for the family. Since he did time for the family, the mob wants to set Tommy up nicely, but he's still a known man in Liberty City. So he's sent down south to Vice City -- a Miami-like town where he can operate inconspicuously.
