To make things even more interesting, the concept of "tickets" has been added to the mix. Each side begins with a certain number of tickets that's reduced whenever a player is killed in action and subsequently re-spawns. When the number is reduced to zero, the game is over.

The game is deceptively simple. Axis (Germans and Japanese) versus Allies (Americans, British and Russians) fighting for territory and control points in Africa, the South Pacific and Europe. Five basic character classes are available and playing them well dramatically changes the way the game is played.

At first glance, it might be easy to confuse Battlefield: 1942 with any number of action games. Like Medal of Honor and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, it's a first-person shooter set during WWII. Like Counter-Strike, it's a team-oriented multiplayer game, and similar to Team Fortress Classic, it contains a number of gameplay modes, including a capture-and-hold scenario which acts as the focus of the game.
